HOME

I had lunch with Teresa today!!! And we both forgot to take pictures. Boo. We met at JCWs at Thanksgiving Point. Teresa wanted to go somewhere with fry sauce and cherry coke. Haha. We ate outside and talked for hours. It was awesome. I wish she would move here. Both of her boys will be going to BYU in the fall. Weston is there now. That is why Teresa is in town.

Jorja came back from Trek tonight. Emily came back from her mission on Wednesday. She was in Taiwan. Ebony missed picking her up from the airport because of Trek. Emily was released over FaceTime because all of the members of the stake presidency were on Trek. Ebony got to be there for that, on the trek side.

Jorja said the trek was pretty easy. I remember Stockton saying the same thing. They did eat like kings. I need Mike to find the trek video he put together years ago. I'm pretty sure the youth in Georgia had a completely different experience, at least with the difficulty level.

Gavin's family came over to swim today. They seemed to have a lot of fun. Stockton and Gavin were even able to do back doubles off of our board. What! They can't get to bounce to work for a lot of things, but for some reason backs worked a lot better.

Mike and Preston went on a campout today. They were told they would be sleeping in an old barn. Mike was worried about this. He started taking his allergy medicine a few days ago to prepare. Well, turns out he didn't need to worry. The old barn turned out much different then we anticipated.
 No hay in sight.

I think they are going to have a great time. This is Clint Okerland's family cabin. I think it was about four hours away. A tiny town in Utah called Loa.

The Flying, Flipping, Twisting Turkey Classic

Yes, that is the actual name of this diving event.  I got the kids up at 6:00 so we could get there in time for warm-ups.  Jorja didn't want to wake up.  I told her she needed to go or she should have stayed overnight at her young women's activity.  I let her come home early in order to go to this.  Preston really wanted her there.  Mike came later. He went to our exercise class first.

This meet seemed to last forever!  I thought it would end at 1:00 at the latest.  It didn't end until after 2:30.  I felt bad.  I should have packed some food.  Stockton was starving by the time it was his turn to compete.  He had eaten half of a protein bar, so I thought that was all he wanted.  In the middle of his meet he came and found us and asked for the rest.  I had just eaten the rest of it about thirty seconds before.  I felt so bad!  I had nothing else to give him!

I did the paper scoring for Preston's competition, so I was able to video his jumps from the deck.  I didn't bother videoing Stockton's because I was up too high.  Mike took pictures though.

Look how folded over Stockton is on that last dive.  Amazing!  I absolutely love watching him dive.  It just took way too long today!  I hope Preston loves it as much as Stockton does.  There were a couple of reasons this meet lasted so long.  They were planning on having two judging tables.  One for three meter and one for one meter.  They couldn't do this because they didn't have enough judges. If they had this both three meter and one meter could be diving at the same time. The other reason it took forever was they had the Junior Olympic divers (Stockton) dive 11 dives on each board.  There were also at least twice as many divers at this meet then there were last year at this same meet.  Anyway, we survived.

We went to Sizzler after the meet to stuff our starving selves.  That food tasted delicious!

Swim Pictures

I got the boys up early so they could be in the swim/dive team pictures for our neighborhood.  We usually are out of town every time they do this.  Jorja missed it again this year.  Preston is in the front of the crowd, Stockton is in the back.
I took the kids to see The Secret Life of Pets today.  I only fell asleep once during the movie.  I'm proud of myself.  Afterword we went to OHOP.  I love the crepes there.  I like the one by my dad's house and I wanted to take Willy there.  Today when we went was so weird.  The hostess sat us at a table the was not clean.  Specifically under the table. There were lots of scrambled eggs.  We thought they were going to clean it, but nope.  Stockton held up his feet for about fifteen minutes. I finally asked the hostess if she had a broom we could use.  She finally came and cleaned it.  I told Willy, "This is not usual.  Restaurants in America are usually clean."  It was really weird.

Mike got the boys mostly ready for Youth Conference tomorrow.  The paper we got Sunday said you can't wear shorts.  Too bad that is all Willy brought.  Mike was going to take him to the store to buy pants, but then found some pants that fit Willy.  Kind of.  It was pretty funny, but I'm sure everything will be okay.

Nigel

I headed down to Provo this morning to set up for the dive meet.  I ended up working there for about three hours.  I came home, ate lunch and headed back to BYU with Stockton.  There were so many people there!  It was crazy!  Stockton got registered for the meet and I asked his coach if I could just take him home.  He didn't want me to.  I should have done it anyway.  We stayed for two hours and Stockton only got about five dives in.  I hurried home, dropped him off and headed to the park to pick up Jorja.  Matt had taken her to her softball practice, thank goodness!
Stockton

Rachel's family got the heartbreaking news today that it was Nigel's body that was found.  I am so glad his body was found, it would have been even worse not knowing.  Rachel's brother Malcolm wrote about Nigel.  This is part of what he said.

Nigel was such a good big brother.  My heart swells each time I think about getting one more of his big bear hugs or to hear his contagious chuckle.  He was so stalwart in his faith in God despite trials that would've hardened the softest of hearts.  He abstained from drugs and alcohol his entire life, while it would've been so easy for him to slip into them.  While Nigel's last days were more tragic than anyone who knew and loved him could bare to imagine, they serve as an exclamation point to the trials and tribulations of his life, and the millions who suffer quietly with mental illness.

I feel that "mental illness" is a blanket term most of us use to identify those who appear or act different than the rest, but I feel even more that it is a vague expression we employ to avoid grappling with the many headed serpent that is the broken brain.  Afflictions of the mind come in all degrees and varieties but my brother was only fifteen years old when he was struck with a harrowing loss of something we take for granted every day: the ability to experience reality through a clear lens, and to engage in it with the full joy humans were intended to.

Nigel fought so hard for the last fifteen years, and wanted so badly to be seen as "normal", that he kept his battle as private as possible. Each year his condition worsened and every time he lost touch with his mind, we lost a little more of our poor Nigel.  In his final days he would've loved seeing all of you who searched so hard and prayed so hard for him.

This is not a normal post about a lost loved one because Nigel's death was not normal.  I would not normally go into such detail about something so private but Nigel's story deserves to be told truthfully.

Nigel didn't deserve to be treated like a criminal, and so many of us are left behind on earth to wonder, how could someone like him be chased into the hills only to die of exposure and be left to decompose in the wilderness?

We've come a long way from the dark ages, executing and imprisoning people who are sick and suffering, but not far enough. My brother needed a hospital and professional attention but instead received a jail cell.  Even though multiple people within the Gem County Sheriffs department knew of Nigel's illness and had known him for years, and even though our family pleaded for help in transporting Nigel to a hospital, the policy of the Emmett Police Department and the Gem County Sheriffs department is to refuse all "Mental holds", or transport of mentally ill persons unless they pose a danger to themselves or others as determined by an officer or deputy.

They gave him a court date and released him on bail.

Nigel was free and his condition was only worsening.  The very next day, Sunday April 10, would be the last time I got to see my big brother.  The police were contacted again as Nigel succumbed to the aggression that is often associated with the throws of mania, and he was stopped on foot at the mouth of Little Gem Cycle Park.  As two Deputies attempted to hand cuff him, he fled into the baron hills that would lead him to his resting ground.

According to the coroner, Nigel most likely died of hypothermia. Although we may never know for sure what happened in his last hours, we know that there has never been a soul more ready for their creator's embrace than our Nigel.

While Nigel would want us to forgive those who could have prevented this, he would not want us to let this happen to anyone else.

Nigel would not want us to cry for him.  He is released from chains that most of us will never feel the weight of.  He is light, he is joyful, he is in good company, but I know he wants his death to have meaning.

To change how someone else like him is treated.

To face the homeless and prison epidemic fueled by our inaction to help those who only wish to be loved and treated with compassion.

So go out and love someone today.  Know someone with bipolar? Know someone with schizophrenia?  Know someone with depression? Know someone who can't step on the crack in the sidewalk?

TALK TO THEM!

Ask them questions!  The policy and budget of our nation can only be changed to help those suffering if we make our voices heard.  It's 2016 and we are late.  It's past the time we enter into a new enlightened era of awareness for our brothers and sisters burdened by mental grief.

I love you all so much and thank you so much to anyone who made a difference in my Nigel's life.  I know he is hard at work right now and he expects us to do the same.

Nigel, you've helped me grow so much, and I want so badly to be like you when I make it there.  Love you buddy.

Colorado

Mike and I checked Stockton out of school around lunch time and headed to Colorado.  Stockton has a diving tournament this weekend. He is only able to compete on the 3 meter because the 1 meter event in his age category is on Sunday.  We opted out of that.  Mike drove the motorhome so Stockton was able to sleep the entire way.  The best thing about the motorhome is Stockton is able to catch up on sleep.  He does not sleep long at home.

We made it to the pool around 4:30, right when warm ups started. These guys dove until about 7:30.  Stockton went to Colorado without ever having competed his twist dive.  The one he smacked on a few days ago.  Well, he pulled it off!  This is the first time he successfully landed his front 1 1/2 full twist.  Ignore his happy mom cheering, but his coach is hilarious.  While holding a baby she jumped up and did a little dance.  The video is hard to see, but you can make out what is happening.
We went as a team to Chili's after practice.  The kids were beat.  The dive club had made a reservation there a few days before for 8:00.  I don't think we were seated until around 9.  Laurel was furious.  She did get free appetizers for our entire table.  I watched the BYU game from my phone.  Just watched what was happening with a little animated basketball court.  It would have dots where the basket was shot from and sometimes I would catch an animated dot arching toward the basket.  Not sure how to best explain that, but it was better than nothing!  I'm glad BYU pulled out the win!

My dad came over and picked up Preston for a sleepover.  He spoiled him rotten with pizza, milkshakes, and movies.  I little kid heaven. Maysen and Jorja stayed at home by themselves.  They were both happy with that arrangement.

Learning a Dive

I have no idea why I couldn't get my blog to work these last few days. Now I will play catch up.  I went to dive with Stockton.  He wanted to compete a inward 1 1/2 full twist at the dive competition on Saturday. That is what he signed up for.  As soon as he walked into practice Laurel said, "No!"  Stockton said, "Yes"  Laurel said, "Well, we'll work on them and see."  Turns out they only worked on the dive Laurel wanted him to do.  She wanted him to do a 1 1/2 full twist.  Stockton has wanted to learn that dive for awhile.  Twists are hard.  Here is Stockton's first attempt at that dive on the 3 meter.
I wish I had kept the camera rolling for longer because Matt and Mickey were both on the floor laughing so hard, for a long time! Stockton is a really good sport, but that had to hurt!

I watched the BYU game today.  That was a fun game!  BYU dominated!  I took this screen shot at halftime.
Ha!  Ummmm.....tv people.....BYU is ahead by 21, not the other way around.  I pointed it out to Mike.  (I had been watching the game by myself.)  He said, "Are you sure BYU is ahead?  Sometimes I get confused who is winning."  Hahahahahahahahahaha!  YES, I'm sure I know BYU is ahead by 21 points.  All of my cheering downstairs should have been a clue.  Mike wasn't 100% convinced that I was right.  I thought that was hilarious.

Selfies

Mike and I were trying to organize some of our old photographs.  We have a long ways to go!  I found this beauty that I totally forgot about. Mike reminded me we had it hanging up in our hallway in Georgia for a long time.  These two were best friends for about a year and a half. This picture was taken right before Cameron moved back to Washington.
Cameron & Maysen
Stockton had a high school dive competition today at BYU  This car had a crazy paint job.  It looked like it changed colors as your drove past. Too bad it was in an accident.
Stockton took third place at the meet.  He did great.  He landed all of his dives and they looked really well.  After the meet we took Stockton to Pizza Pie Cafe.  It is similar to Stevie B's, but not quite as delicious. Stockton was very patient with us as Mike stopped at Home Depot and then I ran into Harmon's on the way home.  It took a lot longer than we thought.

Jorja is giving a talk in church tomorrow.  It is her first one.  She is very nervous.  She hung out in my room and we talked for several hours about it.  We spent a lot of time on lds.org.  She was in tears and I asked her if she would like a blessing.  She did.  Mike gave Jorja a sweet blessing which seemed to calm her nerves.

I did say that Jorja and I talked for several hours.  It wasn't all sweet and anxiety.  Jorja took my phone and enjoyed taking lovely selfies of herself.  I will now enjoy posting several of them.  I won't post all because for some reason she took a billion!  (That might be a slight exaggeration.)
 Jorja's selfies
She also changed Mike's profile picture to a "lovely" selfie of her.  I made her change it back, but his original picture was Bowser from a picture on my old phone.  She went through and found different picture for me.  This is a lot better!  Look how adorable Mike is!

Jorja has become a master of procrastination.  She gets that trait from her mother.

3, 5, 7 & 10

The main road in our subdivision is being repaved.  Looking at the schedule I knew it would be a pain to take Preston to diving.  I asked him if he wanted to go with Stockton today.  He was excited about that. I thought he would mostly stay on the 1-meter.  He might be brave enough to climb up to the 3-meter, but I didn't know if he would be brave enough to go off of it.  Boy did he prove me wrong!  Warning! There is going to be a ton a pictures, and most of them probably look the same.  But I love them.  This was such a fun day.  The picture below is my favorite picture from the day.  What a brave little boy!
Preston
Before class started, Stockton took Preston up on the platforms.  Water polo was playing below, so I'm glad they didn't try to jump off then!

Mike Tuckfield (Isn't that the greatest name for a dive coach?) worked with Stockton and Josh on the tower approach.  That was fun to watch!

Preston went straight to the 3.  I couldn't believe it!  He was nervous, but jumped in pretty quick.
Preston
I love how Stockton is encouraging him from the 5
and Josh is encouraging him from the ground
 He did it!

Mike told Preston to go into the water with his hands straight up or his hands straight down.  Looks like Preston is using the straight up method.  Fine by me, because that is adorable.
 Preston off the 3
No fear now.  He's loving this!
 Look at that form.

Oh boy.  Preston's on the 5!
 What?  Hardly any hesitation!

 Getting closer.....
 HE DID IT!
 Who is this kid?
Preston came over to the 1-meter after jumping off the 10.  He had the BIGGEST smile on his face!  He yelled, "Mom!  I did it!  I did it!"  Yes you did.  He got on the 1-meter and laughed at how small it was.  He did a dive, no problem.  This scared him a few weeks ago!

 Flying
Wow.  Today was incredible.  I couldn't believe Preston.  He blew me away.  Stockton couldn't believe him either.  Preston said that he realized it was his only chance to have the first time he jumped off the 3,5,7 & 9 be the same day.  When he was on the platforms he told Stockton that one he steps off he tells himself, "Well, there's no turning back now!"  There is one boy who is scared to jump off the 10.  I think he is 11.  Stockton and Josh have been trying to get him to go off for several days.  Stockton said there should be a roundabout gate, like they have at the Lagoon exit.  Once you get on the board the only way off is jumping down.  Haha!  Now there's an idea!
