We had our New Beginnings program today. I know it's a little late than usual, but we have no girls coming into the Young Woman program this year. It is the year of the Deacons. It was nice to have this program farther away from the Evening in Excellence that we had in November. It worked out really well.
The theme for this year is D&C 115:5 "...Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations." We decorated the front of the room with lamps and globes. It is hard to tell in the pictures, but it was really pretty. For refreshments we had an icecream bar. The toppings were all value colors.
We had a program by the girls. Maysen gave a talk on knowledge which went really well. She was a little disappointed because she stumbled over a few thoughts. I was proud of her. She did her talk without notes, which is really hard to do. It takes a lot of practice to get right, and I was pleased that she was willing to try giving a talk this way. She is only going to get better.
My favorite talk was by the bishop. He is a doctor and gave some stories from when he was an intern. One of the stories was about a five year old boy that had a cockroach in his ear. (The boy had come in for sticking a doll eye in his other ear, they didn't know there was a cockroach in his good ear!) Interns are not allowed to do procedures without a regular doctor present. The doctor was excited to show him how to get a cockroach out of the ear. First you flood it to drown the cockroach. The other doctor had a long tool and was beginning to pull out the cockroach. When she got it right in front of her face she realized 'I'm a woman' and she screamed and threw everything across the room. That story made me giggle.
Anyway, we had a great night tonight. The turnout was fantastic. Everything just fell into place. I love it when that happens!
