Sister Grisel

 We got the kids up 'early' so they could listen to Kelsee Clark give her homecoming talk over Zoom. She did a great job. You can tell she loved being a missionary. Jorja woke up to this comment on the toilet instagram page from Jordyrobs. She thought it was pretty funny.

The young women had a back to school event today. They had the three class presidents speak and had dessert. Jorja was asked to speak on coming out of your shell. She didn't prepare anything, but nailed her speech. She talked about being shy and how hard it was to reinvent herself. She talked about wanting to run for freshman office and being by the few people she was friends with not to do it, that she would only embarrass herself and they would be the only one that would vote for her. I'm glad she didn't listen! She talked about how scary it was to be outgoing. She talked about things she wishes she had known going into highschool. Not to care about what others think, reach out to people, don't worry about being in a friend group, don't wait for others to reach out to you...make the first move, boys are stupid etc. I wish I would have recorded it so I could remember everything. There were many people that came up to her and to me to let her know what an amazing job she did. Suzanne Heaton told me that Jorja said everything her daughter needed to hear. They she teared up and said, "From one mama to another, thank Jorja." Matt Reed told me that Jorja was captivating. She had everyone's attention in the palm of her hand. She should really think about becoming a public speaker. Hahaha. Little did he know that at one point that was what Jorja wanted to be. This picture looks like there was no one there, they just were mindful of social distancing and Mike and I were toward the front.

Jorja left and went to Brenton's house to meet with the other sbos. They have so much to do before school starts next week. Hopefully they can get everything done. While they were there, Sadler posted the pictures of the toilet in front of different people's houses. Then the video of the toilet being locked away. The door shuts and I lock the door. I'm wearing pink gloves when I lock it. Later we heard so many people asking who was wearing the red gloves. Hahaha

Today I randomly got pictures of Stockton! Yay!!! It's been a long time since this happened. The mission president had Stockton and his companions over for dinner. The mission president's wife sent these to me! She said, "This is Sister Grisel from the Arizona Tucson Mission. I just wanted you to know our family had the pleasure of having your son and his companions over for dinner. What a wonderful spirit they brought. We enjoyed a message and testimony from each Elder. The spirit was so strong. They are unified, kind, and respectful of each other. I am sending a picture I thought you might enjoy." After I thanked her she wrote back, "He is an amazing missionary. you did a great job raising him!" Awwww.

Going

I went to Shannon's house today and was able to talk with her for a bit. We lost Maysen's snow boots this winter and that has been annoying. Over Christmas Shannon brought up Erica's boots. The other day Shannon called me to let me know that Maysen could keep them. I ran up to her house to pick them up. Perfect timing since Maysen will be going to the cabin this weekend. I went straight from Shannon's house to pick up Jorja from school. We had her last dermatologist appointment in Bountiful. Well, hopefully her last. On the way there she got a text saying they were having a prom meeting with Packer. Welp, can't go to that one!

I went to parent/teacher conference for Jorja. Mrs. Fergusen looked so confused when I sat at her table. When I told her I was here for Jorja Smith her eyes got so big. She said that she had no idea Jorja was in our family, and that Jorja and Maysen sure are different. Haha. Yep, they are! Jorja's teacher are great. They have been so good at working with her, especially when she misses so much school for being sick. Jorja wanted me to tell her math teacher that she's a beast at math, except I couldn't remember exactly what she said. I said, "Jorja wanted me to tell you she's something at math." Her teacher responded, "A beast? Yep, she tells me that." Hahaha

Preston had baptisms for young men's tonight. He left about 5:30 and I don't think he got home until 8:30, maybe even later. I was thinking they took the kids out for pizza afterwords. Nope, it just was super crowded. Jorja had a painting night. She seemed to have fun with that.

Maysen came home tonight!Things were kind of crazy as she walked in, but it is so great to have her here! Jorja had to decide tonight whether or not to go to Costa Rica. One of her friends got the same scholarship as Jorja, but late tonight she texted Jorja and said she decided not to go. Jorja was sad and didn't know what to do. She wouldn't really talk to me about it. Maysen overheard me talking to Mike about how she needed to decide either way. If she doesn't decide, then she is deciding not to go. Which is fine, I just didn't want her to regret it and choose not to go because she was scared to go alone. Jorja didn't know one person in Taiwan and she absolutely loved it. Anyway, Maysen went downstairs and talked with Jorja. She asked her about the Costa Rica trip and Jorja told her she didn't know what to do. She has always wanted to go to Costa Rica, but she wasn't sure if she should go. Maysen said, "Then you're going to Costa Rica. You should go if you have always wanted to go." And that was that. Haha. Sometimes you just need a big sister.

Watch Party

I had a hard day today. I know it's not a big deal, but it still hurt me a lot. I had relief society today. I went like I always do and was just sitting listening to the lesson. Jorja was asked to be a class president at the beginning of January. They decided to set her apart today. Jorja texted Mike and I around 1:20 to let us know. The problem was, I never received the texts. They never came through. For some reason, about 1:50 I had the random thought that maybe Jorja was getting set apart today. Then immediately I thought, "No, I would have been told." Still, I prayed right then and there that I wouldn't be forgotten and someone would come and get me if it was today. I kept looking at the door. I texted Mike about 5 minutes later and asked if Jorja was getting set apart today. Right when I sent that next about five texts came through from Jorja and Mike talking about it. I jumped up right in the middle of the lesson and ran out of class. I ran to the young women hallway and looked in all the windows. I saw the Bishop and Seth setting apart Quinn. As soon as it was over I went in and asked if Jorja had gone yet. They said yes. I choked out, "Why didn't anyone tell me? I'm going to cry." I rushed out of there (class was over) and hurried out. I cried the rest of the day. I felt so forgotten. That might have been the last time I would get to see Jorja set apart of anything. She leaves in a year and a half. I tried to explain to Mike and Jorja why I was so sad. Why didn't they come and look for me? Mike kept saying that he thought I saw the text and I wasn't able to come for some reason. "What is more likely, the text doesn't come through in a building with a history of texts not coming through, or me seeing the text and not even responding. When have I missed anything for Jorja, ever?" The only time I miss things for her has been when I have been in New Mexico watching Mike's kids. I explained that it would have taken two minutes to check and see if I got the message. Two minutes! I just wasn't worth two minutes. I was devastated. I went down to my mom's grave and laid there for over an hour. I just cried and cried. I am tired of her being gone. She's been gone long enough. I'm sick of it. Anyway, I know that isn't a big deal to anyone but me, but it meant a lot to me and I didn't even get the opportunity to be there.

Jorja's friends came over for tacos tonight. The girls in student government. Bode and Jack also came. They were able to watch the video Mike made for Sweethearts. It was super fun. Jorja posted something on snapchat with all of them together and someone asked if Kelsey was opening her mission call. (Kelsey is a senior, but I think she is 17.) Anyway, they staged a fake missionary call opening for Kelsey. What a bunch of goofballs.

Seminary

Today is the first day of the second semester. Jorja ended up getting all As with two A-. Math and physics. Not bad. Jorja didn't like her seminary teacher last semester. Stockton had the same teacher his senior year and didn't like him either. I heard about him a lot. A few weeks ago when I had to check Jorja out because she was sick, I was talking to the seminary secretary. I asked her if they would switch teachers or try and keep them with the same ones. She said they would try and keep them with the same teacher unless they were asked differently. I asked her if she could move Jorja. She said no problem and that she was working on the class lists right then. Welp, Jorja got the same teacher. She texted me in a panic about it. I tried and tried to call, but no one would pick up the phone. Anyways, I eventually got through and was able to get Jorja moved to a different class. Two of Jorja's really good friends are in her old class this semester, but Jorja said she just couldn't do it. Spencer, her ex boyfriend, is also in the class. I think it would be super annoying for her to be in seminary with him. Maybe another class, but not seminary. After all, he broke up with her because he 'had a prompting'. That is all well and good, but was the prompting for him to ghost her all summer? I think it would be really annoying for Jorja to have to listen to him being all righteous, knowing that he wasn't kind to her at all.

Anyway, for the youth activity tonight they went iceskating. Jorja texted me to let me know she lost Preston. Ahhh! I asked her if they were at the rink. She never answered. Losing him at the rink is one thing. Losing him before they got there would be another. She just couldn't find him. He was with Darius. They both came back with sore feet and asked if they could take ice skating lessons in the summer. Haha.

Mike has been so happy that Quackletta is laying eggs again. He has dreams of baby chicks hopping around. Soon Quackletta will gather these eggs to her nest. She is such a good mommy. Hopefully her eggs will hatch this time.

Mike spent the day getting things ready for Jorja's after dance party. They are going to go night swimming while watching Megamind. They also have stuff for smores.

Jorja and Emily spent most of the morning getting everything ready. They planned on painting at the park, but it was cold and kind of rainy. Instead they set everything up at Emily's house. When Jorja and Emily were at Smith's Jorja saw Hadley-Kate. Emily was supposed to assassinate her. Jorja pointed her out. Emily jumped out of the car before she completely stopped it, ran up to Hadley-Kate and assassinated her. Emily said it was the best moment of her life. Haha!

The theme for Sadie's was 'Night at the Movies'. Jorja wanted to be Kevin from Up and convinced Spencer to be Russell. She looked adorable, as always. Jorja went with a group of close friends. This is Jorja's 7th school dance. The crazy thing is that out of all 7 dances, every girl and boy has been different except one. Ellie Anderson was in her Sadie's group last year and in her Sweethearts group this year. I love that Jorja has such a wide variety of friends and that she feels comfortable with so many different people.

Jorja went to Pizza Limone for dinner. She has been carrying around her nerf sword religiously. Well, wouldn't you know it. When she went to dinner she forgot and left her sword in the car. While she was in line she saw Jordan coming up to her with a big grin on his face. She backed away saying, "No! No! No!" But there was absolutely nothing she could do. She is glad that she didn't get out on the first two days though, but she wishes she would have lasted a bit longer.

I helped Mike get ready and then snuck down to Thanksgiving Point to Paige's wedding reception. Paige is my first beehive to get married. Wow! Her reception was beautiful. There was lots of dancing. I hung out with Ron and Javita Henderson. It was a good time. Paige changed her first name when she was changing her last one. She is now Samantha Paige. Her mom convinced her to keep Paige as a middle name. She told her how much of a pain it would be to try and get birth records/transcripts or whatever if it was gone. Her husband has always known Paige as Sam. That is what she was introducing herself as in Hawaii when they met. I hope my kids like the names Mike and I picked out for them.

This dance was the last dance that will be held in the Commons. Next year all the dances will be in the gym while the commons is under construction. Jorja had such a good time. The kids then came here and watched Megamind. It was so cold outside, but Mike had the pool at 98 degrees. They did not get out of the pool until they were ready to go! The firepit was untouched. That's okay. Fun to see so many kids enjoying the pool.

Snow is pretty, just not super fun to drive in. Jorja couldn't get up again today. I am so sick of her being sick. She is sick of it too. She hates it. Mono is awful. Jorja missed Chinese but was able to make it through the rest of the day. I picked up her and Madison after school. The plan was to drive to e-bay, but Jorja had left the address home. Jorja is going there next week for a job shadow thing. We ended up getting Jorja's car washed and then the two girls hung out at home. Jorja had young women tonight and was finally able to go to it. They went hot tubbing. She wasn't excited about that, but ended up having a great time.

Stockton found this weird Winnie the Pooh baseball game. He became obsessed with it. It is so funny. He can not beat Christopher Robin. He came soooo close today! He is given 50 pitches and he has to hit home runs on 40 of those pitches. Regular hits and foul balls also count against you. Today he was on his last ball and had 39 home runs. He didn't make it. Hahaha! He is so funny when he talks about it. He actually said, "Christopher Robin is the Mike Tyson of Baseball!" Oh man, we laughed and laughed and laughed.

Jorja and Preston had their youth activity today. Jorja was actually able to go for the first time in months! It was a combined activity with the Wanderwood Ward. They went sledding. I went and bought two new sleds for the kids, since all of our sleds are up at the cabin. Never hurts to have more. Welp, these sleds didn't make it. Both of them broke badly. Preston's broke the first time he sat on it before the activity even started. Jorja let him use hers. He was able to go down the hill a couple of times before it broke again. Jorja found friends to ride with. I think they had a good time. Jorja stayed up late working on homework. She has worked so hard to pull her grades up. She was so excited today. She has pulled all of her grades up to an A except math. English might be an A-. That is crazy! She has worked so hard. Mike helped Jorja apply for an exchange student program. I really hope she gets it. I think that would be such an amazing experience. It would be for a month in summer to go to Taiwan. It's kind of a leadership/service thing. She would go to ten different high schools and meet with the Taiwan students. I hope she gets it. She had to turn in three letters of recommendation and a letter of authority. We weren't sure what the letter of authority meant. It's hard to figure out from the website. Most of it is in Chinese. Anyway, Jorja went and talked to Mr. Kemp, one of the vice principals at Alta. She got him to write that for her. Now it is all nicely submitted. She spent the rest of the night working on an English essay that was due at 11:59. I am so looking forward to this weekend. It will be nice for her to have a break. She needs it.

Weakness

Mike has this week off, which is awesome! I talked him into going to a $5 Tuesday movie with me. I sent this picture to make Jorja jealous. She has tried several times to see this movie with different friends. It has never worked out. We went to lunch at Mimi's Cafe afterwords.

Preston went to Ben's house after school. No one signed up to feed the missionaries so we made waffles for them. All of a sudden I realized that I should get Preston before the missionaries came. What if Ben had to go somewhere and I needed to pick him up? I wouldn't be able to leave for about an hour. Right as I was about to leave Jorja texted me to pick her up. She was able to leave her Macbeth rehearsal a couple of hours early. Yay! I picked Jorja up and rushed Preston out of Ben's house. We got home a few minutes before the missionaries showed up. Whew!

The missionaries talked about the talk given in conference a few years ago called What Lack I Yet? They asked us if we would be willing to pray and ask Heavenly Father what we lacked. I laughed and said I already know many things I lack! Sister Turner then read Ether 12:27, which is one of my favorite scriptures. "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble;..." Sister Turner pointed out that the Lord is saying 'weakness' which is singular. She said that Heavenly Father doesn't expect us to work on every challenge we have at the same time, but if we go to Him and ask what He would have us work on He will say, "Here, this is what I need you to focus on now." I don't know if I'm explaining it as simply as Sister Turner, but I loved it.

I dropped Jorja off for young womens. They were making pizzas. She texted me after awhile and asked if I could pick her up. She was not feeling well. Boo! Hopefully she'll feel better in the morning.

Sweeter than Sweet

Jorja went to school without her phone today. I just couldn't bring myself to give it back to her. She survived. She stayed after for a LONG time. They were doing costumes for Macbeth as well as their regular practice. I picked her up around 6:40 and we went straight to New Beginnings. Becky Bingham is the Young Womens president and she is awesome. She had a great program. Everything was decorated with candy. She and her counselors made a quilted bag for every girl. It holds their personal progress books, a pencil, The Living Christ on a ring, and a Did I Tell You slot. Becky encouraged the girls to memorize The Living Christ. We have started doing that as a family. They are going to be focusing on one paragraph a month. We will be a bit slower than them. Becky has The Living Christ broken up into paragraphs for them. She also made different cards titled Did I Tell You. She has three cards in there so far and plans to add more throughout the year. It was really cool.

Planning a Baptism

The missionaries came over tonight. We met with them to talk about Anna's baptism. Anna is about twenty years old, and because Mike is the ward mission leader he needs to head things up. I agreed to do the program, Mike is going to conduct. The missionaries are supposed to get the clothes and send me the program information in the coming days.

Stockton and Jorja went to the youth activity tonight. It was a drive-in movie . . . kind of. They brought blankets and pillows and watched The Incredibles at the pavilion by the church. It started pretty late, so they got back pretty late. I think they had fun. Jorja hasn't been able to go to any young women activities for a long time because of softball. I'm not sure what I think about that.

Jorja spent most of the day with her friends. They went 'hiking', played at a park then went back to Isaac's house. One of the things they did was play Monopoly. Isaac couldn't believe she has never played that before. When he asked me about it I told him there were so many great games around, why waste time playing Monopoly? Jorja said she didn't really understand what was going on during the game. Isaac would usually get excited and take her turn for her. I think she had a great time today. Jorja seems to need to be around peers. I'm glad she has found a few good friends.

Wet and Happy

We are starting an adventure this week! Bubs and Ange dropped their kids for us to watch this week. They are going on a church history tour with my dad. Last year they did the first part of the tour, this week they are doing the second part. Nauvoo, Carthage, Kansas City, Far West . . . things like that. It was cool, when they dropped them off they brought in a ton of food and milk. I thought that was really nice.

We taught them Colt Express. They loved it! I expect many games of Colt Express and Werewolf this week!

Stockton and Jorja got back from youth conference tonight. Stockton got home about an hour and a half earlier than Jorja. He came home with the Masters and Ron Covington. They didn't stop anywhere to eat. Stockton didn't mind. Jorja came home with Tom Perry and Ebony. I know there were others in the car. Jorja and Ebony were so spazzy. It sounds like they both had a great time. Stockton threw lots of people in the water. His favorite was when he tried to photo bomb Jacqui while she was taking a selfie with Michael. He dove at her and took her down. (Her phone was in a water proof case.) He also loved the cliff diving. He named the different ledges 5,7,and 10. He said they were about that height. I can't remember everything, but I know he did a double (while wearing a life jacket!) off the 7 and some reverses off the 10. He hit the bottom twice going off the 10. Luckily the life jacket slows him down and luckily it was just his feet. He does miss landing on his head when he does cliff jumping though. I'm thankful that the kids came back smiling and in one piece.

I was telling Stockton's coach that he most likely won't be at diving tomorrow. He has youth conference, but I have no idea what time they are leaving or if Stockton is even going. Stockton said, "Wait? Youth conference is tomorrow?" Yep! That is why I keep asking you if you can go! Jorja really wanted Stockton to go, so he stayed up and finished his film write-ups and took a biology quiz. He will miss bowling, but I think you can miss two bowling classes. He will have to just bowl for fun. We'll have to twist his arm on that one!

Hailey and Drew came over to hang out with Jorja today. Drew and Jorja wrote letters to Miss Falk. The same Miss Falk that hated Stockton. She loved Jorja. She got married over the weekend in Oregon and her name is now Mrs. Taylor, I think. Anyways, they are a bunch of weirdos.

Pi Day

I love pi day! Except when I am doing a no sugar, no dairy, no grain challenge. Dang it! I did buy pizza, chocolate pie and lemon meringue pie for the rest of the family. I didn't have anything note worthy. Mike and I did go out to lunch though. I had wanted to go to this fish place that I drive by all the time. We met there only to find a sign on the door saying they had closed for good. Instead we went to Village Inn. I saw several people walk up to the door, so I'm guessing this was a recent closing.

Mike helped Preston 3-D print a pi pencil holder. It has the digits of pi around the cup. Turned out really cute. Preston loves it.

Stockton went to a Young Mens service project and Jorja did a service scavenger hunt. Jorja and Ebony vacuumed our front porch. Nice.

Ice Skating

Stockton had the state math test after school. The top four of each grade get to compete at BYU. Stockton has gone every year so far. This time there were a lot of sophomores and juniors taking the test. We'll see if he ends up being able to go. He was surprised that Josh wasn't there. He has gone every year with Josh and thought Josh was taking the test again. I wonder if Josh forgot or just decided he didn't want to go.

The youth activity was iceskating. Stockton asked me if he could stay home. He said that every time he goes iceskating he comes home with huge blisters on his feet that last for months. I told him he could stay home if he promised to always remain active in the church and keep a strong testimony. He laughed and agreed. Sweet! Jorja went to the activity with Audrey. She seemed to have a good time.

Audrey came to church with us on Sunday. It is the first time she has come since she turned twelve a few weeks ago. I talked to the Young Womens and told them to get Audrey out of primary because she would be given the boot. Then I talked to her primary teacher and let her know. I talked to the music teacher and said that Audrey would come in so she could get the boot. The music teacher asked me to talk to the primary president about that. I talked to the primary president and she wouldn't do it. She didn't have the boot here and she said that she didn't think they were going to do it because Audrey hadn't been coming to primary. Who cares if you have the boot? What does it hurt to sing to her and make her feel special? I was spitting mad. I then had to find Jorja and ask her if she would get Audrey from class because she wouldn't know where to go. I had to go talk to the primary teacher and Audrey and let them know the new plan. I had to find the YW leader and tell her not to come and get her. I asked her if they would introduce Audrey to the YW and make her feel special. I forgot to ask Jorja, so I'm not sure if this ever happened. Doing all that made me late for my primary inservice meeting. The primary president was talking to us. One of the things she mentioned was teaching the children as individuals instead of just going through a checklist of what to do, or something like that. I was still so mad and I couldn't believe that she couldn't see that not singing to Audrey was doing exactly what she told us we shouldn't do. I understand that she wasn't prepared, but who cares if you have the little boot as a prop? Audrey sure wouldn't. Let me explain what the boot is. When a child turns 12 they get to leave primary and go to young men or young womens. The 12-13 year olds come into primary sharing time and we sing a song. It is the hello song. YW sings 'Hello', Primary sings 'good-bye'. It is cute and sweet. You don't need anything fancy for this. I know Audrey hasn't come for a few years, but that does not mean she has never come and it does not mean she wouldn't have loved it. Okay. Rant over.

I really wanted to stay up and watch Studio C on Conan tonight, but I was so tired and I have to get up for exercise early tomorrow. I went to bed ten minutes before it came on. Hopefully I can find it on the internet.

Game of Life

We had stake conference and got a new stake presidency today. President Hunt has been called to be mission president of the San Jose mission. That is where Nathan and Lisa will be going. I didn't know the new president or any of his counselors. The new president is Robert Clark, 1st counselor is Paul Clayton and 2nd counselor is David Morton. At least that is what I think I heard. It was funny because when President Astile was giving his testimony he called David Morton by a different name. He got made fun of that by several people afterwords. Mike snuck away during conference to fix a computer at the stake center. He was hoping the intercom would work while he fixed it, but it didn't.

Mike and I made fajitas as soon as we got home. After dinner we played Colt Express with all of the additions. We had the horses and stagecoach on this one. Maysen ended up winning this game. It is so hard to keep track as to what is happening. It was fun though. Stockton really wanted to finish his rpg game he had been working on. Maysen packed up while he was finishing. She was able to play it and defeat his final boss: Professor Quigley. Mike and Maysen left for Logan the same time Jorja, Audrey and I headed to New Beginnings. As soon as we got there Jorja became covered in orange.

The theme for this year is ASK. The young women introduced this to the new beehives using the game of Life. I'm so glad I'm not in charge of these events anymore!

I talked to the Liu's about efy with Jorja. Stella mentioned that she was hoping to go see her mom in Hong Kong this summer. Ebony kind of groaned. Without thinking I said, "Maybe you could take Jorja with you." Ebony's face lit up. Ebony is the only one at home right now. She is the youngest of five, I think. Who knows what will happen with that. The problem is, in Hong Kong they speak Cantonese. I want Jorja to have experiences with Mandarin. I don't want her to get more confused if she goes there, I want her to come back more confident.

I hurried and wrapped Chelsea's pictures I had bought for my primary kids. I dropped it off at Natalie's house first, then went to Alex and Andi's house. As I handed the box to them I said, "This is not a toy, so don't be disappointed." Ha! The girls are so sweet. I love them.

Mike got home while I was in Jorja's room talking with her and Stockton. I had already gotten Preston to bed. We were talking about schedules for next year. Should Jorja take AP Geography? Honors math? She will be taking AP Chinese, although I think the official name is DLI 5H Chinese. I want her to stretch her self, to be successful and to not overwhelm herself. We'll see what happens.

Preston's Bear

Preston received his Bear today for scouts.  He has really liked his Bear leaders, Brother and Sister Breen.  I hope he enjoys Webelos!  Judy Anderson will be his Webelos leader.  She did Bears with me.  Preston's excited to only walk a few houses down the road to scouts.

The boys put together a carnival for pack meeting.  There were snow cones and games.  I'm also wearing flip flops.  Doesn't feel like November.

Stockton and Jorja went to Where's Waldo at the mall.  The ward does this activity every year.  Usually my kids hate it, but both of them seemed to enjoy it this year.
