Burn Unit

Side note... blogger changed their format and it is annoying. I can not get all the pictures centered and it bothers me... but I'm just going to let it go or I'll never get caught up...

Jorja went backpacking with Janelle and Janelle's friend. They hiked for three miles and stayed overnight. They met boys on the hike who they are planning on hanging out with next week. How does she collect friends everywhere? I love that about her.

Maysen had her virtual appointment with the burn unit today. We had to upload new pictures this morning, so this is what Maysen looks like today. They spent a lot of time with her. They told her she needed to focus on getting rid of the dead skin. We have an in-person appointment with them in ten days. They also put a bag of gauze, more telfa! and bacitracin together for me. I went down to the burn unit to pick it up. So thankful! The burn unit is at the University of Utah hospital, right next to Primary Children's.

Crater

Maysen's wounds are looking better. Still awful, but heading the right direction. Once again, telfa is AMAZING! The pads just fall off her! We take them off in the shower, so they are soaking, but still! Compared to before this is so happy I could cry!

Basketball is back! I watched the Jazz game tonight. It was so great to watch sports again. The Jazz won then I dashed to Noah and Emma Valentine's wedding reception. I thought this little card they stuck in the envelope with their wedding announcements was darling.
Jorja had a busy day. They finally had a sbo meeting with Packer. She was pretty excited. She got there right on time and was the only one there, besides Packer. Others showed up after fifteen minutes. The student body president was one hour late... and he scheduled the meeting! But, at least they were able to have one. They won't be able to have a hello assembly this year. Instead, they have to come up with a forty minute video. School starts in two weeks or so. Usually the sbos work all summer on their welcome video. These kids were told they weren't allowed to work on it. Now they have to come up with something longer and super fast. It's also finals week next week for the three step to the u kids. Jorja is super funny and creative though, and I bet the others are as well; but still... good luck to them! They went to lunch at Village Baker after and Packer even came with them. That made Jorja happy.

Jorja and some friends went to snorkel in the crater tonight. They had dinner at Chick-Fil-A and then headed over there. She had a great time. I was glad when she made it home. I'm always worried about her.

Her Downfall

Maysen and I went to the doctor first thing this morning. We had tried to take off her supposedly non-stick wound pad, but it was not cooperating. We finally decided to go and have the doctor take it off. Maysen was so sweet and funny at the doctors office. The doctor checked her leg first, then her stomach. We had been there awhile before she got to her breast. When she saw that wound her eyes about popped out of her head. She took a long time getting the pad off of Maysen. It hurt, but she did a much better job then we would have done. The doctor brought another doctor in to look at it and both of them spent a lot of time with Maysen. I remember Maysen was laying on the table. The doctors had been asking her how everything happened. I said, "The worse part is the only reason my husband was cooking spaghetti was for her." Maysen said, "Alas, my hatred of meat was my downfall." Hahahaha. That girl! She is awesome. Anyway, the doctors wanted her to have an appointment with the burn unit. I told them we sent pictures and they never called back so we assumed we weren't supposed to go in. The doctors said that they should have called back either way and to call them again. (I called when I got home. They had reviewed her pictures and wanted to set up a virtual meeting with her. They said that they tried to leave a voicemail, but my mailbox was full. The weird thing is I have no record of the call, but at least we now have an appointment set up for Friday.) Anyway, the doctors wrapped Maysen with AMAZING stuff! They had telfa I had been looking for. I told them I had been to five stores so far and couldn't find any. They sent me home with all they had. I am so happy about that! They also gave Maysen a strong narcotic they told her to take thirty minutes before a wound change. Yay! Things are looking up! I went to two more stores today to look for supplies. Jolleys pharmacy and a medical supply store down in Cottonwood Heights. Jolleys didn't have anything, but the medical supply store had more telfa. Yayayayay! We stocked up! Mike also ordered some from Amazon. Not going to be without that ever again! Would have been nice for Mike's sunburn legs too. They also had the adaptic stuff I was looking for. I bought some but we haven't tried it out yet. Too nervous. Isaac said adaptic or telfa. We know the telfa works, so we have stuck with that. Side note: the doctors mentioned to Maysen how impressed they were with how she has handled everything. I agree! Maysen has always HATED the sight of blood. Even if I say the word blood she cringes. Yet through this she has been a champ. Maysen said that it was so bad she had no choice but to deal with it. I guess that is one way to get over a phobia. Not recommended though.

Jorja spent the day doing zoom classes for Step to the U. She did homework and then hung out with Layla tonight. She loved it.

Jorja likes putting this weird filter on that makes it look like she took the picture with a disposable camera
She actually takes a lot of pictures with her disposable camera app. I think she's taken at least one a day for a month. It is hard to see through the zoom finder. Not sure why she likes it so much. Haha

Side note... I know the bottom picture is not centered. It bothers me. I don't know how to fix it. It is not like that on the edit page. So.... yeah

Reconnecting

Jorja hung out with Hailey this morning
The bandage stuff we got at Walgreens DID NOT WORK! Maysen and I spent at least a half an hour peeling it off of her poor skin. It was horrible. I went to CVS, Harmons, Walmart and Smith looking for the stuff Brother Bingham had told me to get. None of the stores had it. I'm so sad and I don't know what to do. Sherry has been calling me and texting me about Maysen. She is really worried and wants her to be seen by a doctor. Yesterday the pharmacist recommended taking her to a burn unit. I did not know that was a thing. I spent most of today trying to figure that out. Finally I found a place where we could upload pictures and they would contact me. We never heard anything so we were guessing she is fine. Sherry still wanted me to take her in. We have an appointment tomorrow with her regular doctor. Fingers crossed everything will work out for us!

Jorja hung out with Brynlee and Chloee today. Brynlee and Chloee are twins. This is the first time they have hung out since Jorja's birthday I think. Jorja was super close with Brynlee until Brynlee got mad at her and her mom sent Jorja messages to stay away from her. That was hard. I'm glad they were able to reconnect with each other; but I am hoping they don't get as close as they once were. I'm so glad Jorja is such a forgiving person, but I think she also needs to guard her heart. I'm glad she had a great time today.
Brynlee, Jorja, Chloee
The three of them went on a hike and then to the dollar store. They bought a few things and then posted a message for people to slide up if they wanted a present. Then the three of them went around delivering dollar store items. Jorja loved it.

Bucket List Check Off

Our ice machine is broken and we don't have one that is hooked up in our freezer. Maysen wanted a breakfast shake this morning. I tried getting ice out of the frozen water bottle, but that didn't work. I did run to the store and get two bags of ice, so we should be good for awhile.

Stockton called as I was leaving the store. I LOVE it when he calls each week. Lots of times we send pictures back and forth while we are talking. Stockton sent me a picture of his journal. Four more transfers until he comes home. Unreal. I love it! One transfer is on my mom's birthday and one is on Preston's. Haha
I sent Stockton pictures of Mike and I painting the cabin. He laughed when he got this one of Mike. He said, "Give me a second."
A few minutes later this showed up on my phone. Hahaha! I love him!
I sent Isaac Bingham pictures of Maysen's burns. He told me some things to get at the store. The pads he said to get were tefla or adaptic (I think) He said to get kerlix gauze. Also to get come coban to hold the gauze. It was late when I got Isaac's message. I hurried to Walmart, but they were closed. I went to Walgreens. They didn't have anything I needed. I talked to the pharmacist and she helped me pick out things that should work. Fingers crossed they do!

Jack came over and played with Preston today. His parents came and picked him up to go to dinner with his grandpa, then they brought him back over. When Jack's mom came to pick him up she asked how things were. I told her about Maysen's burns. She said she was an expert on burns. Jack had been burned badly when he was little. She came in and helped me wrap Maysen. I told her how frustrated I was that I couldn't find the supplies I needed. She had some coban at home. A few minutes later she brought it to me! She was so nice!

Jorja had a date with Conner today. They went hiking to the Draper suspension bridge. Jorja came home very happy and was super excited that she got to check off an item on her bucket list. Kissing in the rain. Hahaha. She makes me laugh.

Eggs Waiting

Well... we made it home. I wanted to get home a lot earlier, but it didn't work out that way. I drove Maysen, Jorja and Preston. We went through Rigby so we could drop off something to Matt and the kids could see their new house. Maysen was in too much pain and waited in the car. The kids came out to say hello to her though. She had to sit in the seat behind the drivers so the seatbelt wouldn't cross her wound. This is what she looks like today.
Mike and Bear went through Wyoming. They got home before us. We had AWFUL traffic. I wanted to cry. We were stopped on the freeway for thirty minutes near Blackfoot. We were stopped again once we got into Utah, but not as long. We arrived home much later than I wanted to. Mike was happy to find that the ducks were fine and there were lots of eggs waiting for him.
Once we got everyone settled, Jorja and I made four more masks. My dad's plans changed and he is leaving to New Mexico tomorrow morning. I wanted to get masks for the girls done. We also made a new mask for Mike. I had made him two Nationals masks, but my dad lost his mask and needed one. So, we got Mike another one so he would still have both patterns. Anyway, the masks turned out cute but we did not get pictures. I ran them over to my dad's house and stuck it in his mailbox. I went to bed sooo late tonight! It is nice to be home though!

Out of Paint

Ben's dad came up this morning to pick him up. He had to work this evening. That was super nice of him. I hope Ben appreciates him! We spent the day working on the cabin. Maysen spent the day in pain. She hurt more today than she did yesterday. Poor girl.
Jorja
We got three sides of the cabin and some of the railing done before we ran out of stain. We are hoping to come back in a couple of weeks to finish it up. The part that is painted does look a lot better. It is not professional by any means, but it will do the job for us.
Mike
Mike, Jorja and Preston went to fill the cars with gas. Jorja saw an ice-cream truck on the way home and had to stop. Looks delicious!

Painting the Cabin

The original plan was for Mike and I to drive down to Idaho Falls when Bear woke up. We needed to get more stain. Well, with Maysen's injuries I didn't want to leave her. So Mike and Bear drove to Idaho Falls early this morning. Maysen was up pretty early so I'm glad I was here to get her medicine and help her get situated. When Mike came back we started painting the cabin. We got two sides done. I'm so glad we got the sprayer because this is taking forever. I can't imagine painting this with rollers!
Not creepy at all!
Mike
Jorja and Ben went up to Jackson Hole today. They just looked around the souvineer shops and got ice-cream. Short and simple, but they had a great time. Maysen reviewed Jorja's essay while she was gone. Maysen said she did a great job and was very impressed. Yay! Jorja loved hearing that.

Maysen Got Burned

Not the hurt your feelings kind of burn, but the painful kind of burn. The day started great but didn't end well. The picture below is from the middle of the day. Mike took Preston out on the kneeboard after we ran out of stain on the cabin.
Preston
We finally started staining the cabin today. Well, we stained the shed. We wanted to practice here first. I had bought two five gallon buckets of stain, but that was not enough. We almost finished the shed, but not quite. We didn't even attempt the back though. We would have to move a lot of logs for that to happen. Jorja and Ben helped for a bit, but it was mostly Mike and I. Jorja did have online classes she had to attend.

Look what a difference the stain makes!
I got to talk to Stockton for thirty minutes today. I sent this picture to Stockton while I was talking to him. He got a great laugh out of it. It is the Niagara Falls tours from the US boat and the Canadian boat. Shows how different each country is handling corona. The US boat is running at 50% capacity. The Canadian boat has a maximum of 6 people.
Mike has loved having his boat. He loved sailing yesterday and wanted us all to be with him. He wanted to do a dinner sailing cruise with us. He brought the boat as close to shore as we could get and then had us meet him down there.

Mike was excited to put the sails up as soon as we got out a bit. Most of us hadn't been on the boat with the sails up before. He also was excited to have dinner. He put some steaks on his grill. Maysen doesn't like meat and so he put some water on the stove in the cabin area to make spaghetti for Maysen. He left the pot for the water to get hot and came up to the wheel. Things were pretty normal and calm when out of nowhere the wind picked up to 15 mph. Our sail was completely up and not angled perfectly. It caught the wind and lurched sideways. I heard laptops fall and Maysen scream. It was pretty scary. Mike was frantically trying to get the boat okay, which he did. He jumped down to the cabin and came right up and told me Maysen was burned. What? I hurried down there. The pot of spaghetti water had been thrown at Maysen when the boat lurched. She wasn't even aware the spaghetti was on the stove and was hit with a painful surprise. I tried calling Brooke and Jackie but couldn't reach them. Maysen asked me to call Julie Valentine. Jorja called Brenton, but both of his parents were hiking. I had Jorja call Becky Bingham. She is the young woman's president. Her husband Isaac is an ER doctor. Luckily he was there. I sent him pictures and he walked me through what to do. Which was basically give her 600 mg Advil and 1000 mg Tylenol. He said to put a wet coldish towel on it and not to wrap it or put ointment on it for a few hours. Whoops. Our first aid kid on the boat had some burn ointment. Maysen kept saying, "It feels like I'm still burning!" Isaac said that the burn ointment will keep the heat in. Sorry about that Maysen.
This is where Ben, Jorja and Bear were sitting when everything happened. Maysen and Preston were at the table.

Maysen's burns
Mike got us back to shore and Jorja drove us to the cabin. Ben and Bear stayed on the boat with Mike. They sailed the boat to the dock in the crazy wind and lightning. I'm glad Ben was there to help Mike get the boat out of the water. The sad thing was if Maysen hadn't gotten burned, Mike would have loved this adventure. Brooke called me and was able to explain what Isaac had told me. When Maysen got situated all she wanted was Preston to come and keep her company. He brought his laptop and they watched some show together. He sat next to her for hours.

Maysen's burns a few hours later
Mike and Ben were able to get back safely. Mike feels just awful. I'm glad the medicine has kicked in, but Maysen is still in a lot of pain. I feel so bad for her.
