Halloween

Happy Halloween! We had a low-key Halloween this year. Jorja was busy though. She went to Frightmares at Lagoon with Riley, Sami and Luke. This had been planned for awhile. Mike and I kind of tried to talk her out of it because Brett and Rachel said Lagoon was so crowded last week. Jorja said it was barely crowded today, so that worked out well!

They left Lagoon around 6:00 and got changed for a Halloween party at one of their friend's. Jorja dressed as Coraline and Riley as Wybie. I'm not familiar with the show, but this is what they looked like.

Mike, Maysen, Preston and I just hung out around the house. We did our regular chores and hung out at home during trick-or-treating. We didn't get many people. Mike, Maysen and Preston all played a computer game. Populace or something like that. I watched the BYU football game. They won by a long ways. Western Kentucky. Sure wish corona hadn't destroyed their schedule. Actually I wish corona didn't exist at all!

Voldemort

Jorja was gone all day. She went to school to help Packer and to work on the fundraiser. Then she went to Kate's house with Bode, Brenton and Dawson. She brought Kate a cute gift basket. (About two weeks later Kate's mom sent Jorja a video and Kate was holding a stuffed Dog that was in the gift basket. Kate talked about how much she loved it. I can't remember what she named it, but it was a super cute video and made Jorja very happy.) Jorja came home for just a second and we ran to the store and got some flowers for Ella. Jorja, Bode and Jake went to Ella's Harry Potter dance show. Ella was Voldemort. I also found out that BYU applications are due Monday. How did I miss this? Usually I'm on top of things, but this slipped through the cracks. There is no way Jorja can get teacher recommendations and interviews with the Bishop and Stake president in time. I'm so sad. I still am trying to convince her to apply, although it will be harder to get in when she missed the priority deadline. Jorja says to me that she has no interest whatsoever in going to that school and that every fiber of her being doesn't want to go there. Still, I want her to apply and have choices. When she sees the cost of the other schools compared to BYU she might change her mind. Fingers crossed she gets the Ambassador scholarship at Utah State. On a side note, Stockton has been out on his mission for 21 months. I miss him.

Biggest Enemy

I took Preston to Bountiful to see the dermatologist. They are starting him on accutane. I have a huge regret about not starting this with Maysen and Stockton early. Maysen had bad acne, but it didn't bother her. I should have just scheduled the appointments and had her take the treatment. She wouldn't have complained and then she wouldn't have had to deal with the acne as long as she had to. I just didn't know what to do and didn't know this was available and affordable. I'm starting early with Preston so he won't have to deal with this in highschool hopefully.

Jorja dressed up for Halloween today. She went as Chef Linguini. She had her stuffed Remy her friends gave her on her shoulder. She looked adorable.

Jorja takes a volleyball class at school. She always tells me how bad she is at it. Well, today she was on the worst team and they were playing the best team. Somehow she blocked Dylan Mismash's ball and won the game for her team. Dylan sent her this snap later in the day. Hahaha

Jorja went to the counseling office to talk about a lot of things. Her Step to the U grade still hasn't been fixed. They ended up taking the entire class off of her transcript while she applies for college. They are trying to get ahold of Jose to see why it hasn't been fixed. I hope they put it back on! With the correct grade! It did make her grade go from a 3.8 to a 3.9. So annoying that Jose did this to her!

Preston's at Alta

Preston had to take an in-person math test today. It was scheduled around lunch time at Alta. I helped him find the room, then I went and picked up a sandwich from Village Baker for Jorja and food from Chick-Fil-A for Preston. Jorja and Preston met me and I handed them their food. They went inside and ate it during Jorja's lunch. I waited in the car. Jorja brought Preston back out when lunch was over. He had a great time being a big highschool kid and hanging with Jorja and her friends. Also, he said the test was easy, so that's good.

Jorja had to bring back her graduation stuff today. That's crazy. We also spent time today filling out college applications together. This is random, but these are the only two pictures I have from the day. I'm guessing she did some student government thing with Bode after school and was mad at Bear for some reason.

Jorja's 18 fo Today

Jorja is an adult! Officially 18! Wow! She has brought such joy to my life. A fair amount of stress too, but I wouldn't trade her for anything. I filled out the paper to have 'Jorja's 18 fo today' on the sign outside our neighborhood, but for some reason they didn't put it up. Maybe they didn't like the fo? Oh well. I checked Jorja out of her volleyball class to take her to lunch. She met us at OHP. Pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes for her. Crepes for everyone else. Mike had a meeting and couldn't come, but we brought him back an apple pancake. Maysen texted me a picture of the dessert pancake they brought Jorja. I had run to the UPS store to mail Stockton a package. Nothing exciting, just his voting ballot. Anyway, lunch was delicious and the company is the best.

Jorja got back in time to go to her lunch, which she spent filling out paperwork to get activities approved for the fundraiser. She stopped by Packers after school and said that the only thing she wanted for her birthday was for him to approve her activities. He didn't like that she had filled out all the papers. He wanted her to work with the committees. She is getting frustrated at all the hoops she keeps being asked to jump through, and the lack of communication. I am proud of her for working so hard. Anyway, Bode found her after school and brought her to her car. Her friends had decorated it. They also gave her a stuffed Remy from Ratatouille. It has a magnate in it and can stay on her shoulder. She loves it.

We took Jorja to the Labyrinth for her birthday. It is kind of like an escape room, but it is may different rooms. Most of the rooms have three puzzle things. They were actually quite hard. The nice thing was when one room stumped you, you could go to another one. We had tickets for two hours. I had a few of Jorja's friends meet her there. Ella, Giselle, Riley, Jake, Bode, Brenton and Sami all came. It was perfect because Jorja got to hang out with her friends while Mike, Maysen, Preston and I all worked on the puzzles together. We would see Jorja running around the place while we were there. For the first half hour I sat on a bench and talked to Stockton. He called right as we were going in. It was so cool to talk with him! He told me a story about how some Elders from a different mission in Arizona referred someone to them to help with service. They asked to call. It was Elder Valentine. How many Elder Valentines can there be? At the end of the call, Stockton asked which mission they were calling from. He said Pheonix. Stockton said, "Is your first name Ian?" He was stunned. Hahaha! Stockton was talking to Ian Valentine! Ian is in our ward and grew up with Stockton. I was able to tell Brenton, Ian's brother, about the call right there. It was so cool!

Anyway, after Jorja and her friends came to our house for pizza and cake. Jorja opened her presents. Maysen gave her a present earlier. They went to Michael's before Maysen's birthday. Maysen wanted things for a terrarium. Jorja wanted things to make a farm in her glove box, so when people randomly open it there is a farm scene. Anyways, they each got the other those things for their birthdays. Preston gave Jorja a new water bottle. She lost hers a few weeks ago. Jorja's big present from us was Impapa roller skates. They are pink and she really wanted them. We had looked together and they were sold out everywhere. It looked like they wouldn't be back in stock until March. I ended up finding them on eBay and was able to surprise her with them. Jorja had a great birthday. I only got pictures with a few people that came. Disappointed in myself that I didn't get a group picture. Oh well.
Jornja is seriously how she wanted her name spelled on the cake
Didn't get 18 fo today on the sign, but at least she got it on the cake
Bode & Jorja ~ he wore their sweethearts sweatshirt to her party. So awesome.

Jorja and Sami
Jorja, Giselle, Riley and Jake all went to the top of Pepperwood to look at the stars. While they were gone, Ben came over. I had invited him, but he wasn't able to go because of corona. He takes care of his grandparents and has to be super careful. He brought Jorja a Crumbl cookie, a balloon and a card. I told them where she was and he drove up there and gave it to her. Jorja came back shortly later. She had a text from Sophie asking her to look on her porch. Jorja asked me to look, but nothing was there. Sophie told her it was pretty big. She then decided she put it at the wrong house. Jorja and I went on a little scavenger hunt to find it. We found this chair a house two doors down from us. It also had a Crumbl cookie and a card. Hahaha. Definitely for Jorja. Jorja loves it.
It was a good day to turn 18

No Brett for Me

Jorja talked in church today. It was also Isaac Johnson's mission homecoming. Riley and Ella came to watch Jorja. Jake was also there, but he is in our ward anyway. Jorja was so happy they came! Sacrament meeting is now broadcast over zoom, so Jorja's friend Giselle watched that way too! Even better, Brett and his family watched, Matt and his family watched and my dad watched. How cool is that? Brett sent me this picture while Jorja was talking with the caption 'Watching Jorja'. Home church is awesome!

Marie, Grace, Eve, Mina, Brett

Jorja did great. She had notes, but rarely looked at them. I found her notes she printed out, so I'll put them at the end of this post. Jorja is such a confident speaker, and she just keeps getting better and better.
Jorja, Riley, Jake, Ella

We were supposed to have dinner at my dad's today, but with Max's corona diagnosis I didn't think we should go. I was so sad. I decided to make masks for their family, to at least keep myself busy. I cried the entire time. My brother lives in Ohio. He drove two days to get here and I can't even see him. Mike saw how sad I was and said maybe I should just go. I couldn't. How could I not let Jorja go to many things she wants to go to, but the first time it is a big sacrifice for me I give in? I did watch the World Series while I was making masks, so at least I was able to communicate with my brothers through group me. Dodgers won. Crazy the Rays tried to steal home. Lucky for the Dodgers they were not successful. We didn't finish the masks until pretty late. I drove to my dad's house twice today. Once after church where I left the hamburger buns we were supposed to bring to dinner on his front porch. This time I put the masks on Matt and Sam's old door and texted Rachel when I was home. Jorja was surprised that I didn't knock and say hi and stay six feet away. I told her I would have probably just cried. Plus, how would I be able to say to Grace and Eve to stay away from me if they wanted to give me a hug? I just couldn't do it. Corona's stupid. Anyway, here are the notes from Jorja's talk.

Hi, good afternoon brothers and sisters. It's so weird to be standing back up here again but I'm so happy we have this opportunity to come back to church again after these past months. Alright, so before I start, I just want you all to think of one scripture story that has changed your life. And I want you to kinda keep that story or that experience in your mind as I talk today and in just a little bit I'll share mine with you but first I want to take a second to talk about how the scriptures can change your life.

Before the scriptures can change your life, you have to be willing. Willing to ponder the scriptures, willing to seek out that truth. You have to continuously put forth effort in your scripture study before you can see those life changing results. One of my favorite scriptures that mentions this is 1 Nephi 10.

I'm not the best at this. I usually come home from a long day at school and tell myself I'm gonna take time out of my day to ponder over a chapter or two but then the homework comes and I wanna hang out with my friends and before I know it the day's over and I'm exhausted. And then I end up grabbing my scriptures and flipping to a random page and I read one verse and it's like Jesus wept and I'm like ok great and then I go to bed and forget about it and life goes on. But every couple of months I get so inspired to really focus on my scripture study and I make a real effort to actually ponder over scriptures that I sometimes might just skip over when I'm tired and wanting to go to bed. And I promise you that life is so much happier and you receive so much more inspiration when you make a real genuine effort to increase your spiritual learning. As you set your personal time aside for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, I promise you will grow closer to Him and more fully be able to understand his love for you.

Alright now coming back to that scripture story I wanted you all to think of, I want you to remember that experience you had or that moment when you realized you were receiving inspiration from the scriptures that could change your life. Mine isn't really a story like David and the lions den or like Nephi building a boat, it actually started from my patriarchal blessing. I received my blessing when I was 15 and in probably the darkest stage of my life. My freshman year was hands down the hardest year of my life. I was just starting school as a big kid, and I was having a really hard time with friends. And it got to a point where I was just genuinely scared to come to school and I felt so lost and alone and it was almost like I was unable to feel loved by anyone. And I got my blessing and I'm actually embarrassed to say this, but I was just mad. Because it didn't answer the one question I thought I needed in order to keep going I had been fasting for a specific question to be answered and when it wasn't, I kinda withdrew myself from the scriptures and the gospel because I was just mad. And that is SO embarrassing to say now, because now I realize I heard something that I needed a lot more. Once I got my printed copy of my blessing, I was reading through it again, and I was still mad so I wasn't really paying super close attention to it but there's one line that I've just never forgotten.

I bless you, Jorja to be an example to others. Let your light shine, in your own way, and you will light the way for others. You will set an example for them to follow, to draw strength from you and the way you live your life

I read that, as I was in the darkest most dreadful time in my entire life and I just started crying. I didn't understand how I could be a light for others when I wasn't even happy myself. After I read that, I started marking every single scripture that talks about light or being a light or an example to others and I don't know why it is, it could be the most random scripture ever, but I'm just drawn to it now. Which brings us to my favorite chapter of scripture in the book of mormon. And that's 3 Nephi 12. Before I read a couple of my favorite verses from this chapter, I'm going to ask each of you to close your eyes and just think of that person who is your light in your life. Someone who just has the light of christ within them and I just want you to think of that person as I read. 3 Nephi 12.

That last verse, 16, about letting your light shine to all others so you can be an example unto them, has just always impacted me so much. And I don't know what it is, but something about being a light of christ just stands out to me so much. I hope that all of ou have met someone who reminds you of 3 Nephi 12:16, and if you haven't yet I promise you will.

For me, my person who just fills me with light is my best friend Ella. She doesn't know it, but she's been my number 1 example my whole life. We didn't actually become close friends until this year, but I've known her basically my whole life. Even when I was a loser and the shyest person ever who never talked to anyone, I just wanted to be exactly like her. And I probably didn't realize it when I was little, but that's because she's just always had the light of Christ with her. She's the kindest, most genuine persons I know and she has changed my life more that she could ever know.

I'm not just saying all of this because she's sitting right there and I want her to know how much I love her, but because I know that every single person here has the light of christ within them. And you may not realize it, but I know that every person here has been that light for someone else to draw guidance from. I promise that as you truly ponder over the scriptures and grow closer to your Heavenly Father, you will feel of his love and it will be made known unto you that you are his sons and daughters and you are truly lights of the world. I challenge each of you to live your life as the light of this world, and to put forth an effort to being that light and I promise you will change someone's life. I know that the scriptures are true and we can draw strength from them everyday and they can genuinely change your lives. I promise that he loves you and has provided the scriptures as a way for you to grow closer unto him. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ amen.

Those were Jorja's notes. She didn't say things word for word, but followed the basic outline. She did fantastic. Also, the things she said about Ella are true. Ella was in the Chinese program with Jorja through elementary and middle school. Jorja has always thought highly of Ella and several times mention positive things about her. I remember her telling me how Ella was one of the nicest people she has ever met. I'm so glad they have become such good friends this year.

No Lagoon for Me

Brett and Rachel took their kids to Lagoon today. My dad went with them. I REALLY wanted to go, but Jorja is having friends over as kind of a birthday thing, so I stayed home. I can not believe Jorja will be 18. Who knows if I will be able to celebrate another birthday with her in person, so I am not giving up this one. No matter how much I want to see my brother. Rachel texted me this picture. They actually ran into my Aunt Jackie from Idaho there! How cool is that! Markell was there with her kids. Scott and Traci were there with theirs. I'm glad Brett got to see them! Also, Rachel texted me and asked if my dad had called me. Max has corona. Dang it! We are supposed to have dinner at my dad's house tomorrow. That was going to be the only time I could see Brett this trip. I haven't seen Brett and his kids in over a year. The last time I saw Rachel was Israel. They were going to come here this summer, but corona changed their plans, now corona is ruining everything again. I'm so sad! We also found out that Brett is getting deployed again. This time to Qatar. He leaves sometime next year, but his boss called them while they were driving to Utah. He decided that news couldn't wait until he was back from vacation. He also called them on Rachel's birthday. Happy birthday Rachel! You lose your husband for another six months!

Dad, Jackie, Brett

Jorja and Jake went shopping to get a gift basket ready for Kate. A few of the sbos are going to be able to meet Kate on Wednesday, so Jorja put together this basket for her. She got a stuffed animal for Kate's twin too. Jorja is the best!
I went to Ashley Scott's bridal shower. I can not believe my beehives are getting married! Paige was married last year, and now Ashley. Crazy that if corona hadn't happened she would still be in Portugal on her mission!

Jorja had some friends over for her birthday. Not really a party, just a hangout really. A few of them brought pumpkins and they carved them. Most of them came later. Jorja had hotdogs and a fire place going. Mike set up the blow up movie screen and they watched a movie on the grass. I can't remember which movie they ended up watching. Jorja had a good time though.

Moving In

Jorja had a long fun day. She was at school for a few hours doing whatever Packer needed her to do. On her way home she called me in a panic. She wanted fake pumpkins and couldn't find them at Michael's. She didn't have time to look at any other store. I was in the middle of exercising and super sweaty, but went to Hobby Lobby anyway. I was embarrassed about how I looked, and that is really saying something! I did find Jorja some pumpkins she could use for her date. The girls threw a Halloween dance tonight. The day date was at Ella's. They did a carnival. They bobbed for apples, had a face painting station, painted pumpkins and lots of other things. Jorja had a great time.

Today was moving day for the ducks! Mike got his duck pond to a spot where the ducks can finally enjoy it! Mike was so happy. He grabbed Cream, the duck who has a severe limp, and brought her to the pond. I tried to get Angel, but she would not come to me. I cornered her toward the pond and she eventually flew in. The ducks loved it. Mike is happy.
